Portrait of Janine Hauer

E-Mail: janine.hauer@ethnologie.uni-halle.de

Interests

Human-environment relations, time and temporality, anthropology of the future, ethnographic methods, critique and the role og anthropology in science and society, anthropogeography, interdisciplinarity and how to practise it

Current research

Currently, Janine is developing a research project on resource shifts in a Central German chemo-industrial complex. As the “Anthropocene” is “marked by major changes in the chemistry and chemical composition of the atmosphere” (Crutzen 2002) this project aims at tracing the chemical industry’s pivotal role in making and shaping the Anthropocene while also interrogating its possibly catalysing effects on broader energy and resource transitions.

Previous positions and research

Janine studied European Ethnology (BA & MA) and Social Sciences (BA) at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and obtained her Master’s degree in 2015. After that, she worked as a lecturer and course coordinator at the Institute for European Ethnology at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. In 2016 she joined the interdisciplinary Integrative Research Institute for the Transformation of Human-Environment Systems (IRI THESys) and started her dissertation research under the working title “Transforming Rice Ecologies. A Case Study from Burkina Faso”.
Across these years Janine conducted research on urbanisation, land-use change, market formation, and emerging futures in a development context in Burkina Faso. She has done fieldwork in Ouagadougou (2014 & 2017, 2018) and Bagré, BF (2017, 2018).
