How do people create differences by working through the possibilities existing within their worlds? How do techno-legal devices and time articulate forms of political action? In this conversation, we will build on the arguments that I lay out in A Future History of Water to consider a casual politics of the planetary. By tracing the history of a seemingly unrealized constitutional reform in Costa Rica, the limits of a narrow commitment to materiality become evident, and the possibility of a casual politics of the planet come into relief. Combining published work and reflections on my ongoing research, I propose a conversation around water, the casual politics of techno-legal action, and our contemporary predicaments with extraction as a geosocial formation.

To prepare the session and ensure a fruitful discussion we suggest participants read the Introduction and skim chapter three ‘Lists’ from Andrea’s book: The future history of water: https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/24903.
