Contemporary cities are related to industries in a variety of ways. Ports have grown into powerful economic hubs and spaces of urban diversity and ‚global cities‘ have been shaped by the flows of finance and information – which are likewise marked by extreme social differences. Moreover satellite cities host nuclear power plants and peripheral towns are exploited as sites for resource extraction. The so called „shrinking“ cities, on the other hand, are caught in the process of deindustrialization. Industries are equally being shaped by urban developments: they have to adapt to policies and regulations or redefine their economic aims, or adjust working conditions, according to changing public expectations.
This workshop series investigates urban industrial entanglements as sites of endurance, renewal and care. Instead of thinking in dual categories such as industrial versus postindustrial cities or new versus old industries, we propose to investigate those entanglements as situated relational spaces, which are dynamic and controversial, and at the same time sedimented in and from specific cultural and historical contexts.
