For more than 15 years sociological debates over religion and secularization have been characterized by a confrontation between critics and defenders of secularization theories. At the same time, we have seen a dramatic rise in public debates about the place of secularism in political regimes and civilizational and national self-understandings across the world. Against this backdrop this paper presents elements for a theory of “multiple secularities” by addressing different structures of cultural meaning associated with the distinctions and entanglements between religion and other social spheres.
