Cooperation in the field of Indian Ocean Studies

Prof. Gwyn Campell joins the ZIRS as a visiting professor in his capacity as a Humboldt Research Award Winner.
Following the nomination by Prof. Dr. Burkhard Schnepel, in November the historian Prof. Dr. Gwyn Campbell, director of the Indian Ocean World Centre at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, has been awarded the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Research Award. By means of this award Campbell and Schnepel will continue and intensify their many years of interdisciplinary cooperation in the field of "Indian Ocean Studies" at the Institute for Social and Cultural Anthropology and the Center for Interdisciplinary Area Studies, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, as well as within the framework of Schnepel's Max Planck Fellowship-Programme on the Indian Ocean World at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle.

Prof. Gwyn Campbell was a lecturer at the Summer School „The Indian Ocean World and Eurasian Connections. Networks of Connectivities: Routes, Commodities, and the Politics of the Indian Ocean” at ZIRS.
The Director Prof. Gwyn Campbell, a specialist in the economic history of the Indian Ocean region, joined ZIRS as a visiting professor. Part of his teaching and research activities at ZIRS and its associated institutions were
- a seminar that he hold together with the social anthropologist Prof. Burkhard Schnepel, director of ZIRS, on "Indian Ocean World Slave Trade"
- the Amo-Lecture 2016, organised by ZIRS and the research cluster „Society and Culture in Motion“ at MLU, on „The Role of Africa in the Indian Ocean World Slave Trade“.
